Jobs: Development Director

Starting Date: ASAP
Deadline: Oct. 29, 1999

Web Lab develops, supports, and champions innovative uses of the Web as a powerful new tool for engaging the public in explorations of contemporary issues. Among Web Lab's programs and initiatives are the Web Development Fund, which provides financial support and visibility for creative Web projects; development of new sites, either on its own or in partnership with other organizations; and building a "community of practice" among people who want to increase the positive social impact of the Web.

Web Lab's efforts have already attracted remarkable levels of public participation and media attention, from the more than 500 teams and individuals submitting proposals in September 1997 for the first round of the Web Development Fund, to the enthusiastic coverage in The New York Times, Wired News, Yahoo Internet Life, Salon, and the MSNBC Web site, to the willingness of the hottest high-end media companies to offer highly discounted services for a chance to design Web Lab sites.

A program of the NY Foundation for the Arts, Web Lab is supported by grants from the Ford Foundation, PBS Online and private foundations. This position offers an opportunity to work with a small, informal but dedicated staff on high profile, socially engaged web projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all fundraising activities as Director of Development for Web Lab, a small start-up Nonprofit with an annual budget of $500,000.
  • Initiate contacts with corporations, foundations, and individuals.
  • Research, edit, and write grant proposals.
  • Work with Web Lab staff to generate program descriptions and budgets for grant proposals.
  • Oversee tracking of deadlines and reports, data analysis and reporting on assigned projects.
  • Develop and maintain supplemental informational documents for proposals and packets.
  • Work with Advisory Board to develop new sources of support.
  • Develop annual fund solicitation materials and manage mailings.
  • Work closely with the Executive Producer on special projects and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Superb writing and editing skills.
  • Strong on-line experience a big plus.
  • General knowledge of Internet, communications, and technology.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities and independent initiative.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks; work accurately under deadlines and the pressure of a fast-paced work environment.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • 2-3 years of development experience, including grant writing, required; background in corporate solicitation preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills; diplomacy in dealing with public.
  • Development professional with interest in the arts and technology.

FYI:

  • We will place heavy consideration on your cover letter, so don't be afraid to take risks and really wow us. We know there's the perfect candidate out there, but we'll need you to let us know that person is you.
  • Web Lab is an enthusiastic equal opportunity employer and invites applications from candidates regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, age or physical disability.
