I've been working in a government agency for two years now. Don't expect a lot of perks, pats on the back, or feedback for performance. In my experiences, the government tends not to encompass the same philosophies as private industry does; ie: promotions, team-effort, desire for excellence, and upgrade training.

The government works slowly. If you have ideas on how to improve things, try to offer them slowly and gradually. Many workers have been in their positions for almost twenty years doing the same work the same way, and really are threatened by any new blood. Just try to blend at first (without compromising too much of your ideals), then offer suggestions for improvement gradually.
Good luck--I'm trying to get out of my government job and move back into industry.

: I'm starting a new long-term temp job with the government next week. Having never before worked in a bureaucratic environment like that, any helpful hints would be much appreciated.
