Rick,

Besides going the temp route that John suggested, I think you should also look up your city's homepage, find computer and/or software businesses
that are of interest and try to network with them.
That is, I would that you seek out the owners of
these businesses by going on "informational interviews" (in which you ask the questions about
the industry, how your skills rates in the marketplace, and any related advice and referrals
[not a job itself]). Another strategy would be to
join a club in your industry; volunteer to do jobs
on a committee, give free training advice telling
them enough to get them wanting more - so that they will ask for additional information that they
would be willing to pay for. You have to realize
that getting the right career in this field requires that you "kiss ass" as I tell my students
during my interview courses every semester. Good
