I need to know if an employer can lawfully deduct shortages from a servers pay. In this the establishment is a bar/lounge. This employer insists on paying employees in cash to avoid paying SSC, or any other employee benefits. This server was not the only person to be taking cash and making change on the days the shortages occured. I was a waitress for 27 long years and if i remember correctly, it is unlawful to deduct shortages from employees pay unless there has been some kind of contract signed and even then it's "iffy". This young girl had $100.00 deducted from her pay, but the other bartender that was working had nothing deducted from hers. Legal? Thanks to whomever knows.

: Do I have some gripes! I've been waitressing for 8 long years. I've worked in 6 different restaurants. I have so many stories! Basically, I really cannot wait to graduate from college next year so I can never work in the service industry again. People SUCK!!! They are rude, condesending, cheap, demanding, impatient, and so annoying!! My favorite stupid person story is when I worked at the Olive Garden Italian restaurant. A woman looked me straight in the eye and said, "I want to know if there is meat in the meat sauce." Umm, gee, maybe with the name meat sauce, it does!! That is just the tip of the iceberg! I have plenty more to share, if you're interested.

Due to the nature of the work, the abuse, long hours, sometimes thankless efforts, it is considered to be a low end job and treated that way. I have met many people who wanted to pickup part time work, performed the waitressing jobs. We, as a country eat out at restaurants more than anyone else in the world, but the servers are treated ugly.
