Job Insecurity
Posted by: stephanie on June 28, 1998 at 16:58:21:

There is a move by companies to render frontline employees obsolete. When was the last time you stood in line at the bank on payday, with only two tellers working? Oh, that's your fault, say the brass. You should have gotten direct deposit. You should have used the ATM. Why should you expect customer service from a live individual? There is no mention of the fact that relying on direct deposit and the ATM cuts down jobs for these live individuals. Could not the same thing happen to us? Management would dearly love to replace us with computers. But then, the people who have been laid off or downsized would lack the purchasing power that keeps these companies in business. Memo to management: You want to give my job to a computer? Well, that computer isn't in the market for a car, or a house, or goods and services. The computer is not going to BUY your products. As I won't, if you take away my livelihood. When you give our jobs to computers, you are draining your own customer base. Creating an expanded class of poor people with no purchase power will DESTROY your business. So think before you downsize. Who the hell will you sell to? Not to me. I'll be too busy scrounging up money to keep body and soul together to lay out any cash for YOUR products. Or will you sell to the small percentage of Americans who are independently wealthy? News flash, gang--this ain't Monaco. Downsize us, and you downsize yourselves.
