I work for an organization that has had a difficult time filling available permanent positions (we're located in Boston, MA and the job market is so competitive that there's truly a dearth of decent help.) So our department decided to hire a temp who, once proven, would be offered a permanent position. Well, we had this one fellow who ended up staying for nearly a year even though I suspected we would have troubles with him from day one. But we held onto him that long because we were desperate!! Eventually, however, it got so bad that we were willing to have an empt space rather than deal with his antics.

So I guess my response to the person who originally posted this message is this: If you want to be hired permanently then you must show your prospective new employer that you are capable of doing the work asked of you without taking advantage of the company. Don't abuse privileges like e-mail, Internet and telephones. Don't complain. Come in on time. Finish everything they ask you to do and try to do it earlier than espected. Then ASK for MORE work. And most importanly, do what you're asked to do CORRECTLY. If you can achieve all this AND do it with a pleasant attitude, you're a shoe-in for a permanent spot. If they still don't hire you, then take time to really examine your work ethics and skills. If you're ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that YOU'RE not to blame, go work somewhere else.
