: I work in the printing industry on the computer as a desktop operator. I am not working as a designer but rather a prepress operator. If you are not familiar with what that is, I take a designer's electronic file and make it printable. At any rate, it seems to be a rather thankless job yet is extremely stressful as we are constantly working on a deadline that often is unreasonable. At any rate, I do belong to a union...a graphic arts union. We just negotiated a 3 year contract that was loaded with givebacks. Many people lost pay including me. So if you are going to have a union, make sure that it is one that is beneficial for you. Ours seems to be rather weak. The pay scale in our area is being driven downward while the expectations are getting higher and higher as we get more technology. Good Luck!!!!
