Gun Stories [Launched Spring 2008]
What experiences have shaped, tested, challenged or confirmed our beliefs about guns? User-submitted stories from all perspectives.


First Person Plural [Launched June, 2004]
An intimate, transformative online dialogue for women breast cancer survivors from all over the United States. For two weeks, 800 women in 20 small groups exchanged stories and insights about their experiences with a range of topics including relationships with loved ones, friends and colleagues, love and sex, hair loss and weight gain, mothers and daughters, and being a woman with breast cancer I am Not My Breast Cancer, a book based on the dialogue, was published in hardcover by William Morrow in February, 2008 and in paperback by Harper Paperback in September, 2008.


Listening to the City [Launched July 2002]
In this historic dialogue on the redevelopment of Lower Manhattan, over 800 participants in 26 discussion groups spent two weeks reviewing materials, sharing ideas, and voting on their priorities in more than 30 polls. Their recommendations were included in a report to key officials and decision-makers in the redevelopment process.

MSNBC Dialogues [Launched November 2001]
Created in response to the September 11 attacks, these dialogues gave MSNBC.com readers the chance to share stories and discuss the political, economic and personal issues facing the nation and the world. This was also the first-ever use of the newly-rebuilt SGD software.

The Blurring Test  [Launched April 2001]
A playful take on the Turing Test for Artificial Intelligence, this site challenges visitors to convince a bot that they are human. Conceived by artist Peggy Weil, this project received development funding through the Web Development Fund.

American Love Stories  [Launched September 1999]
Produced by Web Lab in partnership with Northwoods Productions and GMD Studios, this evergreened site examining issues of difference in relationships was commissioned by Zohe Films to accompany the broadcast of the PBS mini-series An American Love Story.

NeedCom  [Launched July 1999]
Brainchild of multimedia artist Cathy Davies, and a project of the Web Development Fund, NeedCom conducts market research for panhandlers.

VAGUEpolitix  [Launched June 1999]
The irreverent political 'zine VAGUEpolitix, created by a media-savvy team from New York City and executive produced by Web Lab, launched by declaring boredom America's greatest menace and tackling the issue of crime.

Reality Check  [Launched November 1998]
Produced and developed by Web Lab and GMD Studios with a team of volunteers this in-depth dialogue inspired by the presidential impeachment crisis showcased Web Lab's innovative small group dialogue technique.

Adoption: A Gathering  [Launched October 1998]
This evergreened project of the Web Development Fund brought together the often isolated triad of adoption -- birth families, adoptive families, and adoptees - to explore their common experience.

This evergreened project of the Web Development Fund offered working people a place to ask advice, seek support and learn more about their rights in the workplace (and lack thereof).

Living with Suicide  [Launched June 1998]
Living with Suicide: Shared Experiences and Voices of Loss (June 1998) Created by John Keefe, this active project of the Web Development Fund broke the silence around a difficult topic and has created a place for people touched by suicide to share their stories and find one another.

P.O.V. Salon  [Launched September 1998]
Developed by Web Lab and GMD Studios, the P.O.V. Salon hosted small discussion groups inspired by the weekly PBS broadcasts of the documentary film series P.O.V.

Hong Kong '97: Live in Transition  [Launched May 1997]
Featuring diary entries from Hong Kong residents during the transition from British to Chinese Rule, Hong Kong '97 was Web Lab's first project (before Web Lab had a name), produced in association with Global Media Design and Ambrica Productions.

Public Voices for Housing Choices [Launched May, 2008]
This small group dialogue provided an opportunity for people who live and/or work in San Mateo County, CA to consider and prioritize a variety of solutions to the twin problems of limited supply and high price of housing in the county. The dialogue was sponsored by Threshold 2008, a group of community leaders working to raise public awareness about the county?s housing challenges, and created in partnership with Viewpoint Learning, a nonprofit founded by legendary public opinion researcher Dan Yankelovich to design and conduct specialized dialogues for business and public policy organizations.

Citizen Dialogue on Education Reform [Launched February, 2008]
California state officials were considering a range of potential reforms to the state?s K-12 education system, and they wanted broad citizen input on the best way forward. This small group dialogue created in partnership with Viewpoint Learning (see above) provided an opportunity for educators, parents and others throughout the state to make recommendations to policy makers.

Fly Into the Future [Launched June, 2005; follow-up dialogue, May, 2006]
Commissioned by the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, this small group dialogue created in partnership with Viewpoint Learning, (see above) convened area residents to make recommendations on the future of air transportation in the San Diego region.

E.A 9.11  [Launched March 2002]
E.A. 9.11, which stands for "Everything After: a 9.11 Youth Circle" was created by Global Kids six months after the September 11 attacks. In the discussions, high-school students aged 14-19 addressed, among other topics, the emotional impact of the attacks, and explored how they continue to affect their lives.

Utopian Traces is a multi-linear Web documentary focusing on the communes of Northern New Mexico and the lessons they offer to the virtual communities of today. This project received development funding through the Web Development Fund.

Virtual Nation  [Discontinued]
Virtual Nation combines characteristics of Internet communities with multi-player games to create user-administered virtual nations where citizens can experience the conflicts and relationships that arise during the mediation of personal and public space. This project is seeking further hosting and financial support.
